New revision of British Standards BS82142026

30 April 2026

The British Standards Institution has published BS 8214:2026, introducing updated guidance for fire-resisting and smoke control doors. Released on 20 March 2026, it replaces the previous 2016 edition and represents a significant step forward in fire door standards.

The revised standard expands its scope beyond timber-based doors to cover complete fire door systems, including assemblies, doorsets, and door kits. It now applies to a wider range of materials such as timber, steel, aluminium, glazed metal, and composite designs—reflecting the variety of solutions used across modern construction and refurbishment projects.

BS 8214:2026 also introduces new guidance for metal and composite fire doors, addressing areas where formal industry direction was previously limited. It includes recommendations for specification, installation, maintenance, and manufacture, aligning with current practices and regulatory expectations.

A key change in this edition is a shift away from prescriptive construction details towards a stronger focus on performance evidence and verification. The standard provides clearer guidance on the supporting documentation required to demonstrate compliance for fire door systems.

Updates have also been made to improve clarity around smoke control, door classifications, and installation practices. Enhanced guidance on sealing between door frames and surrounding structures is included, along with measures aimed at reducing misinterpretation and non-compliant installations.

The standard aligns with current UK regulations, including UKCA and CE marking, and reflects responsibilities introduced under the Building Safety Act and Fire Safety Act.

Fire doors remain a vital part of building safety, helping to protect escape routes and limit the spread of fire and smoke. The updated standard supports best practice in their specification, installation, and maintenance, helping to reduce risk and improve overall safety.
